Lead Teacher • Cherry Blossom Class
Karen Lonsky has been a Waldorf early childhood teacher for over twenty years in the Ithaca area. She first found Waldorf education when looking for a school for her daughter in 1985 and knew soon after that she was drawn to teaching in the Waldorf classroom. She worked for several years as an assistant in the kindergarten at the Waldorf School of the Finger Lakes before pursuing her training as a Waldorf early childhood teacher. Ms. Karen received her training at Sunbridge College in Spring Valley, New York, and has worked at the Ithaca Waldorf School since its inception.
Ms. Karen is the author of a book of work songs for the Waldorf kindergarten, and a companion CD, which have been published by the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America. She has also contributed several articles to WECAN's twice-yearly journal, Gateways, and presented workshops about music in the kindergarten at their yearly WECAN East Coast conference. Ms. Karen has been involved in puppetry in Ithaca since the 1980s and is part of the Briar Rose Puppet Troupe, which performs silk marionette shows for festivals and the public. She also performs with and serves on the board of Magic Garden Puppets in Cortland, New York.
Outside of the classroom Ms. Karen and her husband, Joe, perform with a nine piece rhythm and blues band, The Destination, and various other musical groups. She loves handwork, gardening, and spending time with her daughter and two wonderful grandchildren. Ms. Karen believes that Waldorf education truly meets the child with respect and reverence and offers a real understanding of child development and age-appropriate learning. She is so happy to have discovered her life's work in such a warm and nourishing community.
