The Challenge of the Will: Parenting in Action
A healthy will is a powerful and stabilizing force in the fabric of family life. “Oh, we’ve got plenty of will in our house,” many parents admit, somewhat wryly. But there is a difference between “will” and “willfulness.” Willfulness involves power and control, insisting and resisting. Will is action: our thoughts, feelings and choices manifested in our deeds. Healthy will is devoted action.
We adults often slip into thinking that talking is an adequate substitute for doing. The key to building a solid foundation for family harmony is to focus, first, on our own behavior as parents, on what we do, and specifically, what we do to create and sustain our home life. We will explore some simple strategies. From there, we can then turn to fostering healthy will in our children.
