Destiny unfolds me – I grow strong
This past week we welcomed two new families, who are in fact both returning families: Ozzy and Lena Rundels started in grades 1 & 2; and Emma Kessler-Poveda joined the grade 3-4 class. Please introduce yourselves to their parents, Mya Menter & Eric Rundels, and Katja Poveda and Andre Kessler. We’re so happy their here (again)!
Welcome to winter. The children are delighted to see the snow, and I hope it stays long enough for some playground fun. Our holiday is fast approaching, and this time of year always offers an opportunity to hone our juggling skills, with family gatherings, travel and work. Let’s promise ourselves to slow down enough to enjoy these few . . .

Ithaca Waldorf School Calendars for Sale!
These make a lovely holiday gift and they are available now in the office for $25. We have a plentiful supply so go ahead and buy one for everyone on your gift list!
All proceeds will go to the Maria Rabb Fund which was established to provide emergency tuition support for any IWS family facing a sudden crisis (for example: terminal illness, loss of work).
Parent Survey – Early Childhood and Grades
Please pick up a paper copy, or open the attachment below for an electronic copy, of our Parent Survey. We truly value the thoughts and suggestions of the parent body. Your voices shape the future of the Ithaca Waldorf School as we grow and change from year to year. This year it feels especially important as we pave the path to a middle school, and expand into our building addition. These surveys are due by Monday, December 18th in the office. Thank you!
Test of Emergency Notification System
I will be testing our Call’em All texting notification system today. Please make sure that your contact info is current with the office, and let us know if you do not receive this notice on your phone sometime today. Thank you!
And a seasonal reminder of our closure procedure: (from our Family Handbook) IWS follows the ICSD regarding emergency closures for inclement weather. Please check www.ithacacityschools.org or www.ithacanet.org/closings.shtml. In recognition of the fact that many of our families live in areas outside of ICSD, IWS reserves the right to cancel or delay school, even if ICSD remains open. In this instance, you will receive both a text and an email, alerting you to the status of the IWS schedule.
Student Portraits from Lifetouch
At this point all grades families should have portrait order forms and proofs of your children’s smiling faces. Don’t forget to order a class group photo—these did not come on your proofs, but they are available! If you plan to send the physical form in (as opposed to ordering online), please have your forms to the office no later than Wednesday, December 13th.
Early Childhood families will receive a copy of their class photo.
First Annual Crankie Night!
On Friday December 15th, prepare to be amazed. Crankie Night is a presentation of the Grades 5/6 class and will showcase their creations in light and song. If you have never heard of a Crankie Box, you’re not alone, and you will be so glad that we’re letting you in on the secret; this is an art form that deserves a resurrection, and this class has done the form justice. RSVP if you would like to come for homemade soup and bread at 5 pm, or simply come for the performance at 5:45 pm.
Our grades students will perform choral and instrumental music as well as some of the dances they have learned this fall in our new Great Room, on Tuesday December 19th at 11 am. We can expect this presentation, including the traditional Sword Dance, to last approximately 75 minutes, until 12:15. Please connect with Jason Harrington (email@example.com) if you are interested in performing the Sword Dance with other parents at the Winter Assembly – it looks like great fun, and requires a few practices.
The calendar indicates that there will be a community lunch at 12:30; this lunch has been cancelled. If you would like to see a performance of the Shepherd’s Play, it will be performed on Friday December 15th at 7 pm at the Trumansburg Conservatory of the Arts, and again on Saturday December 16th at 7 pm at the Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting House.
