Music Teacher

Ithaca Waldorf School is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic Music Teacher for our General and Choral Music program.  Training or experience in Music Education and in Waldorf education is preferred but not required.  Applicants should have a music background, as well as teaching experience with children ages 6-14.   Applicants must be able to read music notation and have musical proficiency as a vocalist, instrumentalist, or both.  Teaching experience in at least 2 of the following areas are necessary: vocal music, general music, choral directing, recorder, ensemble, string instruments, and/or dance.

We also welcome teachers new to Waldorf education if they have a serious interest in developing themselves as Waldorf teachers. 

Qualifications:

  • BA or BS required

  • Waldorf teaching certificate preferred

  • Waldorf teaching experience preferred

  • Experience teaching grade school-age students

  • Teaching, interpersonal, and classroom management skills

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Willingness and ability to learn classroom instruments specific to Waldorf education

  • Ability to adapt work plan based on needs of particular class    

Responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching 6-10 lessons per week, Grades 1 through 8

  • Preparing specific music presentations for seasonal events, including mid-year and end-of-year concerts and assemblies

  • Supporting other musical events and student concerts throughout the year 

  • Developing an understanding of the Waldorf approach to child development and music education

  • Providing written mid-year and end-of-year reports for each student, in addition to communicating with parents throughout the academic year

  • Collaborating and communicating with colleagues and parents 

  • Attending grades faculty, music committee, and full faculty meetings

Starting salary ranges from $12,360 (30% FTE) to $20,600 (50% FTE). Base pay is supplemented by $150–$250 increments awarded for relevant credentials (such as a BA) and each year of teaching experience.
